FIRST DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE

FIRST Robotics Competition

FIRST Robotics Competition runs annual high school robotics competitions, with the goal of inspiring students to pursue STEM. Around fifty fields are built, shipped globally, and assembled by volunteers for over 150 events. I worked in a small multi-disciplinary team to design the gameplay experience and narrative, create interactive actuated physical structures, and direct the thematic visual design.

Ideation

I worked in a small, multi-disciplinary team to ideate the concept for the game and narrative experience, the overall visual aesthetic, and to brainstorm early physical implementation. This included determining field layout, the main components robots would interact with, and any actuated mechanisms on the field.

Prototyping & Testing

Prototyping involved a combination of CAD modeling, detailed drawings, and mockups build out of wood, before eventually proceeding to final prototypes made from a combination of aluminum frames, polycarbonate sheeting, and actuated mechanisms.
